Day 1
Oslo to Longyearbyen
Fly from Oslo to Longyearbyen. At Longyearbyen transfer to your hotel for overnight
Our expedition begins with your arrival to Norway's capital Oslo. Here we fly you to Longyearbyen, Svalbard's capital. In the midst of this mighty wilderness is the Norwegian settlement of Longyearbyen, only lit by the town lights or camp fire burning in some gatherings, as we arrive at the airport in the dark days. Longyearbyen is often called an antidote to modern-day life and today serves as a prime destination for adventure travelers. We will transfer you to your respective hotels for an overnight, which will be your basecamp for the next few days of your unique experience. For those that arrive here early, we highly encourage to take a walk across town, just to get the feel of how the people live their normal day.
Day 2
Longyearbyen, Svalbard
Drive around on snowmobile and hunt for the lights
After a delicious lunch, we will head out on snowmobiles into the wilderness. Our expert guide will pick you up from your hotel, and take you closer to our adventure site. After giving you a brief and preparing you with all the gears for the adventure, we will begin our 3 hour long ride into the darkness!
Away from the lights of town the aurora is even stronger. During the polar night months of November to January, the sun is at least 6 degrees under the horizon at all times, meaning that we can hunt the northern lights at any time of day. We will stop and enjoy the scenery, and the guide will serve hot drinks and biscuits. The reindeer kick in the snow to find their fodder, and the foxes slink around in the dark. If we are in luck, the Aurora Borealis will light up the magical snow-covered landscape. Our chances are good, as we are right in the middle of the aurora zone!
We take a turn back and return to our earlier spots! With great memories and thrilling experience, we will transfer you back to the hotel for a nice evening.
Day 3
Longyearbyen, Svalbard
Hike to a glacier and explore a beautiful ice cave underneath
2 days into our expedition, we ask you to challenge yourself with a well worth steep hike! Don’t worry, with the right gears and guidance, those with prior trekking experience can easily take this challenge! Under the glaciers of Svalbard you will find another world, a glittering world made by the summer meltwater running through the ancient ice.
Just like the day before, our expert guide will pick you up from the hotel and guide you across the whole day. Today will be a long day of hiking for approx 5 hours, and we hope you are refreshed and all excited for this incredible experience!
This trip starts from the top of town in Nybyen and continues with a snow-shoe hike to about 400 metres above sea level to the Lars Glacier. After about one and a half hours we will arrive at the entrance to the cave. Here we will be equipped with helmets, harnesses, crampons and head-lamps before we continue down into the cave. Once inside we will take our time exploring this amazing underworld with its open halls, tight passages and thick layers of ice crystals. Take a backpack with extra clothes and water - the guides will provide hot drinks and biscuits during the trip.
Day 4
Longyearbyen, Svalbard
Meet your mushy friend and sled into wilderness
They say while in this wilderness, dog sledding under starry skies, with the dancing aurora or glittering moonlight is an experience not to be missed. And this is exactly what we aim to achieve today
After helping to harness the dogs your guide will lead the way out from the yards. The dogs will yelp and bark with impatience, but as soon as we get going a beautiful silence will sink over us. The eager dogs will set off at a cracking pace, but after a couple of kilometres they will settle into a comfortable speed. The guide will drive first with two guests in their larger sled, and the group will follow in two person sleds. Participants will be able to swap between mushing and enjoying the scenery from the sled.
Out in the dark we will turn off our head- lights, and after a short time the contours of the mountains will appear. Looking south, we can see that it is lighter towards the horizon. The snow covered landscape reflects light from the moon, stars and, if we are lucky, the northern lights - and it is astonishing to note just how much you can see in this magical period. After the trip, we enjoy a hot drink with biscuits in our heated log cabin.
Later we transport you back to your hotel for overnight.
Today will be our last day in this unique settlement, and we hope you make the best out of your moments!
Day 5
Longyearbyen to Oslo
Time to say Good bye
Every journey comes to an end, and so our stay with the wonderful people and wilderness of Svalbard. It still would remain dark here, and people would continue to live their days as they do every year. We hope you are looking forward to some sunny days as you take your flight back home. We bid you farewell as we drop you at the airport for departure to Oslo.
